Managing Chronic Health Issues in Pets

Treating Cancer with Chemotherapy

best-dog-vetCancer is a word that scares most people, bringing to mind images of pain, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, wasting, alopecia, progressive disability & ultimately death. The word chemotherapy is almost as frightening, being associated with many of the same effects, but take heart!

Thanks to all of the advancements that have been made, the reality these days is much different. Many cancers are curable. Many others have been put in the category of chronic but treatable diseases, such as kidney & heart disease.

Chemotherapy has been refined with respect to the combinations of drugs used, their optimal dosages and timing. Side effects are well recognized and often preventable or treatable should they occur.

THE GOAL: to control the cancer and prolong survival while maintaining the best possible quality of life, one treatment at a time. We won’t tolerate pain, we won’t permit nausea, vomiting or diarrhea to interfere with life and we won’t let your loved one starve! We will work together with you to recognize, prevent and ameliorate any suffering.

It is important to remember that although we humans have many preconceived notions about cancer and its treatment, our pets have none! They have no concept of disease or mortality; they only know how they feel at the moment, so let’s make them feel well.
